LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Lilongwe First Grade Magistrate Amran Phiri on Friday, July 22, 2022 reserved his ruling some civil society organisation leaders and the other protesters bail application to Monday, July 25..
This follows the arrest of Civil rights leaders; Kingsley Mpaso, Billy Banda, Phunziro Mvula, Chimwemwe Mphepo, Edward Kampanje, Aubrey Harare, Jonathan Phiri and Victor Nyanyaliwa for aiding the continuation of Anti- Judiciary protests in the capital; Lilongwe despite a court injunction restraining them.
The four have been formally charged with two counts including proposing violence at an assembly.
According to the state, the suspects disrespected court’s order that stopped the demonstration and were advising the protestors to burn down judiciary cars, judges and magistrate’s houses and court rooms.
In court, the state asked for further detention of suspects to Maula Prison for seven days so that it concludes the investigations into the matter.
Defence lawyer for Chimwemwe Sikwese objected to the state’s plea saying the state was supposed to do investigations before arresting them.
He added that the suspects are Malawians and they have right to bail.
