BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Mulanje Senior Resident Magistrate Court on Tuesday, August 16, 2022 sentenced a 20-year-old Mozambican, Evance Juwawo to 14 years imprisonment with hard labour for raping a 16-year-old girl.
It is reported that the court heard through police prosecutor, Sub Inspector Lawrence Kambale that on July 8, 2022, Juwawo had sex with the said girl after cheating her that she had an infertility spirit that would make her unable to conceive in future.
Prosecutor Kambale added that to exorcise the spirit, Juwawo called the girl to a certain bush where he raped her.
Despite warning her not to tell anybody, the girl revealed the ordeal to her mother who then reported to police.
Working on the complaint, officers at Chinyama Police Unit arrested Juwawo and charged him with rape contrary to section 133 of the Penal Code.
Appearing in court, Juwawo pleaded not guilty and the state paraded (figure) witnesses who testified against him.
In his submissions, prosecutor Kambale prayed for a stiff penalty to deter other would be offenders.
Passing sentence, Senior Resident Magistrate Shahida Haneef Bakili, concurred with the state for a stiff penalty and sentenced Juwawo to 14 years in prison with hard labour saying this should also be a lesson to him as well as serve as deter to others of similar intentions.
Juwawo comes from Masala Village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Chindiwo in Mozambique.
