LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi National Football team, the Flames continued with their superb performance in the ongoing 2023 Cosafa Cup Senior challenge tournament taking place in Durban, South Africa as they have written another history, qualifying to the semifinals of the regional tournament after 20 years.
In a game played at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Tuesday, Malawi started on a high note from the onset.
Patrick Mabedi’s project seems to be on track as his boys are able to play entertaining and result-oriented football, completing passes and defending as a team whenever not in possession of the ball.
Zanaco FC attacker Chawanangwa Kaonga broke the deadlock in the 30th minute through a spot kick after he was fouled, and easily converted the kick himself.
Patrick Mwaungulu who was a marvel to watch in the afternoon, extended Malawi’s lead at the 37th minute from a rebound after Chimwemwe Idana’s effort had hit the upright.
Mwaungulu was finally voted man of the match.
Patrick Mabedi’s side qualified for the semifinals after amassing 9 points from 3 games played in group B. Brighton Munthali Black Leopards’ new catch has kept three clean sheets.
Flames have scored 5 goals and conceded none and all players of the match accolades have been won by Flames players, Alick Lungu, Chawanangwa Kaonga, and Patrick Mwaungulu.
Malawi lastly qualified for the semifinals of the regional tournament in 2003 after defeating Zambia 4-2 on post-match penalties after regulation time ended 1-1.
Meanwhile, Zambia increased their chances of finishing as the group stage best loser as they smashed Seychelles 4-2 in another group B encounter and finished as runners-up to Malawi with 6 points
