KASUNGU-(MaraviPost)-The Government through the Minister of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) has closed down Kasungu Teachers College following disagreement between students and the management of the college.
The students, who were selected under Initial Primary Teacher Education (IPTE 14) cohort, were protesting against their delayed two month teaching practicum allowances which they haven’t received for the months of November and December last year.
According to some of the students, the communication they received to vacate the campus came at a time they had no any money to use as transport back home; a development which rendered them destitute.
Confirming the development, Spokesperson in the Ministry, Lindiwe Chide, said the decision to close down the college was arrived at as a panacea to prevent destruction of property at the college by the students.
Nevertheless, Chide indicated that the Ministry of Education is only waiting for the Office of the Accountant General to process the payment of the said allowances.
On Saturday, about 700 teacher students under IPTE 14 at the college were ordered to vacate the campus unconditionally.
