Blantyre, June 17, 2015: Prime suspect in the K90 million robbery of First Merchant Bank Perekani Malunga died on Monday at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre.

Southern Region Police Publicist Beatrice Mikuwa said Malunga was remanded at Chichiri Prison and complained of pneumonia on Sunday before his demise on Monday.

“The suspect was taken to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital after complaining of pain in his limbs and doctors confirmed that it was pneumonia. He passed away on Monday,” said Mikuwa.

Mikuwa said the police will also commission a postmortem on the death.

According to Mikuwa, Malunga was expected to appear before the court on Monday, June 11 to answer charges of giving false information to law enforces.

After his arrest last year late Malunga claimed he was a South African citizen. His passport indicated that he was Peter Douboneise instead of Perekani Malunga.
