Mutharika embraces new Japanese envoy Naito Yasushi

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)- President Peter Mutharika on Friday, January 30, 2026 welcomed new Japanese envoy envoy to Malawi Naito Yasushi.

Welcome him at Kamuzu Palace in the capital Lilongwe, Mutharika appreciated Japan’s continued support to Malawi, including projects in roads, health, and capacity-building.

The President said Malawi remains committed to international partnerships based on respect, shared values, and development goals.

Yasushi therefore says promoting business and investment relations will be a key focus of his tenure.

Naito made the remarks when he presented letters of credence to Mutharika.

He said Japan is keen to deepen economic cooperation with Malawi, building on momentum from the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) held last year, which increased interest from the Japanese private sector in Africa.

The Ambassador-Designate noted that Japanese businesses are already engaging with Malawi, with business promotion activities currently underway and Japanese investors visiting the country.d

Naito said he intends to use his tenure to further enhance trade, investment, and broader business relations between Japan and Malawi
