NAP pens Mutharika on levies review to ease fuel prices hike

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The National Advocacy Platform (NAP) has written to President Peter Mutharika, requesting him to review the levies embedded in the recent fuel price increase, citing concerns over the welfare of Malawians.

In the letter, NAP Chairperson Benedicto Kondowe and National Coordinator Baxton Nkhoma emphasize that the fuel price hike has far-reaching implications for socio-economic rights, particularly for vulnerable communities.

The advocacy group acknowledges that the government was justified in raising fuel prices due to global tensions, but argues that the move’s consequences are immediate and will negatively impact all sectors of the economy.

The letter, seen by local media, includes thirteen recommendations, such as introducing an alternative shield to oil price shocks, noting that the Price Stabilization Fund has been depleted.

Presidential Press Secretary Cathy Maulidi says the Office of the President is yet to receive the letter, stating that they will respond accordingly upon receipt and review of its contents.
