BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The deterioration of the Mbizi road in Traditional Authority Dambe’s area, Neno district, is posing a significant risk to locals, particularly during the rainy season.
The road has been experiencing gradual deterioration over the past two years, with the situation worsening annually, according to T/A Dambe.
The poor state of the road is affecting trade, as large vehicles transporting produce, such as groundnuts, from the area to Blantyre city are struggling to pass through, T/A Dambe said.
The situation is further complicated by the presence of other challenging spots on the road, which are also posing health risks, especially during the rainy season when vehicles carrying patients have difficulty accessing the area, forcing people to resort to using motorcycles to transport patients.
In a previous inquiry, the district council’s engineering office claimed to be unaware of the issue, but Neno North Member of Parliament, Thoko Tembo, confirmed knowledge of the problem and revealed that he had already requested assistance from the Roads Authority to repair the road.
Tembo also mentioned that other development projects, including repairs, are expected to be undertaken soon using Constituency Development Fund (CDF) resources.
The poor road network in Neno district is a longstanding issue, with the area lacking tarmac roads despite being declared a district in 2002.
