Nigerian former governor Uzor Kalu

ABI STATE-(MaraviPost)-Justice Mohammed Idris has today sentenced Orji Uzor Kalu, former governor of Abia State to 12 years imprisonment.

The former governor alongside two other defendants; his company, Slok Nigeria Limited; and Udeh Udeogu, who was Director of Finance and Accounts committed the said offences between August 2001 and October 2005 during Kalu’s tenure.

According to EFCC, the former governor utilised his company’s account, Slok Nigeria Limited to retain the money from Abia state government.

This was against Sections 15(6), 16 and 21 of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2005.

The commission also said the offences contravened the provisions of the Money Laundering Act of 1995.

Kalu was granted bail when he pleaded not guilty to all 39- accounts against him but it was revoked when he failed to appear in court on Nov. 05, 2018 and the court was adjourned to 12 November, 2018.

The court was informed that the defendant went for medical treatment and he was ordered to return to Nigeria to submit himself and his travel documents to the EFCC.

The Federal high court has also ordered Kalu’s company, Slok Nigeria Limited to be winded up and has been charged as third defendant in the case.
