BLANTYRE(MaraviPost)-The High Court of Commerce seating in Blantyre has ruled in favor of the Malawi government, allowing the state to seize property belonging to Norman Chisale valued at MK5 billion.
The ruling was delivered by Justice Anneline Kanthambi, following a request from Chisale through his lawyer, Kalekeni Kaphale, who had asked the court to dismiss the case.
However, government representatives in the case, Masauko Chamkakala, and State Advocate Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda emphasized that the law empowers the government to prosecute the individual, not the property, in the manner Chisale requested.
Chisale’s case began in 2022, and he is being prosecuted for unexplained acquisition of wealth, failing to account for how the assets were obtained.
Chisale is also opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) youth director.
