The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) on Wednesday night announced the results of the presidential election and declared Democratic Progress Party (DPP)’s candidate Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika the winner.
Jones Gadama of Maravi Post caught up with DPP’s Secretary General Peter Mukhito after convincing victory over Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in the 2025 General Elections
Excerpts…..
Jones: Secretary General Mukhito, congratulations on the victory. To start, can you give us an overview of the DPP’s journey from the campaign trail to this historic win?
Mukhito: Thank you, Jones. The journey hasn’t been easy. We faced a lot of challenges, including intimidation from MCP thugs who targeted our members without cause. Unfortunately, the police response was not always professional, and even peaceful teacher protests were met with violence without accountability. Despite these difficulties, DPP remained committed to serving Malawians and focused on our message of unity and development. We do not seek revenge but trust that justice will take its proper course.
Jones: Given these challenges, how did the DPP maintain morale and keep the campaign focused?
Mukhito: Our team was deeply motivated by the belief that Malawi deserves better leadership. We stayed united, worked closely with communities, and communicated our vision clearly. While others sought to divide, we focused on building trust with voters, showing that DPP is a party for all Malawians.
Jones: What do you think was the key factor that led to the DPP securing 56.8% of the valid votes?
Mukhito: I believe it was our consistent message of stability, economic growth, and social development. People saw that DPP has experience governing and delivering tangible results. Our manifesto resonated with voters who want progress and peace.
Jones: What role did grassroots mobilization play in your campaign strategy?
Mukhito: It was fundamental. We engaged with communities across the country, listened to their needs, and involved local leaders. This grassroots connection allowed us to build trust and understand the real issues facing Malawians.
Jones: How does DPP plan to address security and rule of law going forward?
Mukhito: Ensuring security and justice is a priority. We will work to reform security institutions to be impartial and professional. No one should live in fear for expressing their political views or engaging in peaceful protests.
Jones: How will the DPP government ensure inclusion of all Malawians, including those who voted for other parties?
Mukhito: We believe in unity and inclusive governance. Our doors are open to all citizens, regardless of political affiliation. The focus is on national development, and every Malawian has a role to play.
Jones: What are the immediate priorities for the new administration following this election?
Mukhito: We will focus on economic recovery, job creation, improving education and healthcare, and infrastructure development. Delivering on campaign promises is essential to building trust.
Jones: How does the DPP plan to engage with youth and women, who are vital to Malawi’s future?
Mukhito: Youth and women are central to our agenda. We will create opportunities for empowerment, entrepreneurship, and leadership. Their voices will be heard in policymaking and implementation.
Jones: Finally, Secretary General Mukhito, what message do you have for Malawians as the DPP begins its new term?
Mukhito: We thank all Malawians for their participation and trust. Our commitment is to serve with integrity, transparency, and dedication. Together, we will build a prosperous Malawi for present and future generations.
