LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi police at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) on Wednesday, arrested a 28-year old South African woman for being in possessing of illegally obtained precious stones (reserved minerals), and attempting to export them.
KIA spokesperson Sapulain Chitonde, identified the suspect as Lerato Mohadi Montaung, holder of South African Passport Number ?478224894, and who was about to board a South African Airways plane to Johannesburg.
Chitonde told The Maravi Post that as the suspect’s bag went through the airport X-ray machine, strange objects were detected; this forced the officers operating the machine to ask the suitcase owner for identification, and go through a physical search.
When the bag was opened, police officers searched it physically, and found three (3) blocks of pink stones, weighing 4.5 kilograms.
“The owner was asked to produce supporting documents that allows her to possess or export, the stones; but she could not. It was at that point that police seized the stones, and arrested her immediately.
“Lerato will appear in Court to answer to two charges of being found in possession of reserved minerals, and attempting to export them. These are contrary to Section 99 (1) (a) (¡), and Section 119 (2) of the Minerals, and Mines Act, respectively,” Chitonde said.
The suspect Montaung, hails from CBD village, in Johannesburg, South Africa, and works as Youth Coordinator for Oxfam Malawi.
