Peter Mutharika and Atupele Muluzi during presentation of nomination papers ceremony

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—Malawi President Arthur Peter Mutharika has settled for son to former President Bakili Muluzi, Atupele Austin Muluzi, as his running mate in the forthcoming fresh presidential election slated for July 2, 2020.

In the botched 2019 presidential election Mutharika paired with Everton Chimulirenji, a move which was aimed at persuading electorates from Ntcheu District and the central region at large.

Speaking after presenting the nomination papers, Mutharika said he has picked the young Muluzi, who is also the president of the United Democratic Front, because he is the  person who can help him to unite and build Malawi.

“I have decided to go with honourable Muluzi because I want a person I can work with to unite and build this country. Honourable Muluzi understands that leadership comes with some responsibilities. He has shown resilience, humility and a commitment to the security immunity of our nation.

“He is determined to continue support my legacy of investment in education, infrastructure. Together with we will build the bridge for the future. Together we will win this election. I repeat, we will win again,” said Mutharika.

Mutharika reiterated that the 2019 elections were free, fair and credible and that the results were a true reflection of the will of the people.

“On May 21st 2019, you the people of Malawi voted in an election that was free, fair, faithful, transparent and credible. That was attested by all international observers. We won that election. I won that election.

“The result of that election was the will of the people. Only one year later, we may be going to another election. This election is not the will of the people. Therefore, I call upon all Malawians to come out to register and vote to restore the will of the people which was expressed in the May 2019 election,” he said.

DPP is an offspring of power struggle in UDF which was formed by late President Bingu Wa Mutharika.

Soon after forming his party, Bingu had targeted UDF members and allies of Bakili Muluzi in his anti-graft drive since his move to form another party had enraged the UDF, which launched an impeachment bid to remove him on the basis of crossing the floor.

Bingu also accused the then Vice President Cassim Chilumpha—who has also already endorsed the candidature of Peter Mutharika—of orchestrating a plot to assassinate him.

Malawians will go to polls on July 2, 2020 following the nullification of the 2019 presidential election by the Constitutional Court.
