PRETORIA-(MaraviPost)-The Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) Church leader Prophet Shepherd Bushiri along his wife Marry will remain in police custody till Friday, October 23, 2020 when their bail application will be heard following the arrest on Tuesday, October 20.

Prophet Bushiri and his wife Marry on Wednesday appeared before Pretoria Magistrates Court for bail application and hearing.

In a brief statement ECG Director of Communication Ephraim Nyondo expressed sadness over South Africa’s state lawyers of not willing to grant Bushiri bail.

“The State formally requested to postpone the case while also resisting bail. Our lawyers vehemently opposed the State’s stance to the effect that they demonstrated their readiness by submitting bail applications affidavit.

“The Magistrate will rule on the postponement on Friday and possibly the bail hearing. We are unhappy about what we feel is a weaponisation of the criminal justice system,” says Nyondo.

He added, “The state reserves the right to arrest and prosecute but surely they cannot always arrest and then claim they are not ready to proceed.Prophet Bushiri and Prophetess Mary Bushiri have always vehemently stood by their innocence and are resolute in their stance that they are innocent.

“It is our wish that the State proceed with their cases without delay so that the truth comes out.We thank the church and general public for your continued support”.

Initially Bushiri’s wife was arrested at her home.

However, a news report by eNCA alleges that Bushiri was “apprehended after attempting to evade arrest”.

The report says Major 1 as the Malawian born prophet is fondly called “subsequently handed himself in at Silverton police station in Pretoria”.
