Mzikamanda is now Malawi Chief Justice

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera, on Friday appointed Justice Rezine Mzikamanda to the position of Chief Justice of Malawi

According to a statement by Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Zangazanga Chikhosi, Mzikamanda’s appointment is with immediate effect.

“The general public is hereby notified that in exercise of the powers confered by section 111(1) of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi, His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, has appointed Justice of Appeal Rezine Robert Mzikamanda, SC to the position of Chief Justice with immediate effect,” read the statement in part.

Mzikamanda becomes a successor of Justice Andrew Nyirenda who recently reached his retirement age of 65.

Mzikamanda, who was appointed as Malawi High Court judge in 1997, was already serving in the position after Nyirenda’s retirement on December 27, 2021 but in an acting capacity.

Before his appointment as High Court judge, he served for many years in the Magistrate Court.

At some point he was also head of the graft-busting body the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for two years.

Mzikamanda was appointed as Judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal in 2012 by former President Joyce Banda.
