Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny in the middle

SEBERIA-(MaraviPost)-The 44-year-old Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny is in a coma and on a ventilator after falling ill from suspected poisoning on his flight back to Moscow from Tomsk, a city in Siberia.

Navalny’s spokesperson Kira Yarmysh disclosed the news in a statement on Thursday August 20.

Yarmysh said Navalny’s plane made an emergency landing in Omsk after Alexei felt unwell following the toxic poisoning that is believed to have been consumed from tea he drank at an airport cafe before boarding the plane.

Reports revealed that during the flight Navalny was sweating before he lost consciousness after visiting the bathroom.

He was rushed to the hospital after the plane made an emergency landing in Omsk and doctors said they believed the toxin was absorbed quicker with hot liquid.

A report by BBC said his doctor Anastasiya Vasilyeva wanted to transfer him to a leading European poison control centre but doctors in Omsk refused to provide documentation about his condition.

Last year, Navalny was rushed to a hospital from prison where he was serving a sentence following an administrative arrest after suspected poisoning but was later discharged after doctors said it was merely a severe allergic attack and not poisoning as earlier suspected.

In Russia, a number of political figures have reportedly come down with a mysterious poisoning. In 2015 and 2017 opposition activist Vladimir Kara-Murza was hospitalized with poisoning symptoms twice due to his political activity.

Later in 2018, Pyotr Verzilov, a member of Russia’s protest group Pussy Riot ended up in an intensive care unit after a suspected poisoning and was flown to Berlin for treatment.
