Two sisters, Jessica Makumba, 21, and Jane Makumba, 29, have been arrested in Chinamwali, Zomba, for allegedly possessing two firearms.
According to Patricia Sipiliano, spokesperson for Zomba Police Station, the arrests were made possible by a tip-off received yesterday, which led to an investigation by the Crime Investigation Department.
The investigation resulted in the arrest of the two sisters, and upon searching them, two shotguns were recovered.
However, sources familiar with firearms have revealed to Zodiak Online that the seized firearms are not ordinary shotguns, but rather old model sniper rifles associated with ambush confrontations.
One of the rifles is believed to be a Benelli M4 tactical, while the other is thought to be a Winchester SXP defender pump.
Another source suggests that the rifles could be greener 303.
The sisters, who hail from Traditional Authority Kuntumanje in Makumba village, rural Zomba, are currently being held in custody.
The police are yet to establish how the sisters acquired the firearms and what their intentions were.
