TNM revamps Police Helpline 990 service in Malawi

In a bid to beef up security in the country, premier mobile service provider TNM has revamped emergency help line 990 for Malawi Police Service in the country.

Speaking during the handover of the service, Head of Sales and Distribution Protazio M’thete said communication is critical component in as far as security of the country is concerned.

“TNM is pleased to take an active part in helping law enforcers in their quest to improve security,” he said.
M’thete reaffirmed company’s commitment to help the police to combat crime which has been on an upsurge in recent months.

“Communication plays a crucial role in the provision of security of the country by ensuring that people are able to report any cases, this toll-free line provides easy access to the general public to reach police for assistance,” he said.

Receiving the donation on behalf of Malawi police service, Deputy Commissioner of police Foster Mangani hailed TNM for coming into their rescue with the help line of 990.

“On behalf of the Inspector General of Malawi Police Services, I would like to thank TNM for this timely gift and the support that it renders to us” Mangani said.

Mangani said the 990 service has not been in operational for sometime due to lack of equipment.

“We have been not reachable for sometimes on 990 and our clients the general public have been complaining” he said
Mangani assured the mobile provider that Malawi Police service will put the gadgets in good use.

“The previous gadgets were lost but now we put proper measures among which is provision of training of our officers on how to use the gadgets,” he said.

TNM has given out 23 handsets which will cover in 23 zones across the country for general crime reporting and two Toll Free Lines to fiscal police for receiving reports on cash gate scandal.

TNM also funds Malawi Police Service with K6.7 million for TV programmes on MBC-TV titled “Tikhale Tcheru!” which is helping in the fight against crime.
