Ugandans vote in crucial election amid internet shutdown

Ugandans are voting on Thursday in a crucial presidential election characterized by violence and internet shutdown.

Voting started at 7:00 am local time and is expected to end at 16:00 local time with longs queues at most polling stations.

There have been reports of delays in getting voting materials to various polling stations on time.

At some polling stations, biometric voter verification kits failed to work.

Once voting ends, counting will begin with results expected to be announced by Saturday evening.

President Yoweri Museveni wants to extend his over three decade stay in power in this election.

His main challenger is the 38-year-old Musician turned politician, Bobi Wine who is enjoying a lot of support from youth Ugandans.

There are 10 opposition contenders trying to unseat President Museveni who got to run again after the constitution was amended to favour him.

Wine whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi has suffered several arrests and attacks during the campaign period.

Journalists who also covered his campaigns and that of other opposition politicians suffered similar fate.
