UTM President Chilima surrenders full salary to help fight covi-19

BLABTYRE-(MaraviPost)—Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima has gone an extra mile in fighting the deadly covid-19 by surrendering his full salary to help amassing resources for the pandemic fight.

Spokesperson of the Vice President, Pilirani Phiri, confirmed the development to local media on Sunday.

“I can confirm that Chilima is giving up three months salary to contribute to the state of public health emergency to help in efforts to halt the spread of the coronavirus,” said Phiri.

Chilima’s decision to surrender his full salary comes barely a day after President Peter Mutharika directed treasury rto educe salaries of the President, Cabinet Ministers and Deputy Ministers by 10 percent for three months and direct the resources to the fight against the coronavirus.

Over one million cases of coronavirus have been recorded but Malawi has so far recorded four cases.

On 20th March, Mutharika declared Malawi a State of Disaster on the basis of Coronavirus attack. There is no lockdown but schools are closed.
