MCHINJI- (MaraviPost)-Malawi female sex workers today, 28th January 2021 held peaceful demonstrations against the governmental order that bars should open at 2 o’clock pm and close at 8 o’clock pm.

The demonstrations started from Lilongwe Community ground to Lilongwe City Council where they delivered there petition.

According to leader of sex workers Zinenani Majawa, the sex workers have demonstrated because the above Covid 19 preventive measure is touching their means of support.

Commenting on the matter, Women Rights Activist Jessie Ching’oma said as people are exercising their rights by demonstrating, it is also important to understand the right to life which the government is trying to protect.

She further said that it is important to discuss on how to balance the right to life as well as right to economic activity as it seems they are both affecting people.

“We are talking about two rights issue here,it’s the government’s responsibility to ensure that people are protected  and people are also fighting for their rights to economic issues. I think its good that we look at both rights and discuss on how we can balance them”, she said.

As such, the demonstrators have pleaded to the government to only enforce the law from Monday to Wednesday and let them operate normally from Thursday to Sunday.

Chief Administration Officer for Lilongwe City Council therefore assured to deliver the petition to the Office of President and Cabinet after receiving the demands paper.
