LONDON-(MaraviPost)-Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has opened up about his controversial decision to replace Aaron Ramsdale with David Raya, admitting it was one of the toughest choices he has made during his time at the club.
Speaking about the goalkeeper change, Arteta revealed that the decision was not due to a lack of quality from Ramsdale, but rather a tactical move aimed at taking Arsenal to a higher level.
“I was very convinced we had to make a change, but not because Aaron didn’t have the quality,” Arteta said. “I believed that to go to the next level, we needed a different profile of goalkeeper.”
The Spaniard admitted that the move was difficult to justify both inside and outside the club, especially considering Ramsdale’s popularity among supporters and his previous performances for the Gunners.
“Changing the keeper from Ramsdale to Raya was very difficult to explain internally and externally, because maybe it did not make sense to everyone,” he added.
Arteta also revealed that former sporting director Edu questioned whether he was fully certain about the risky decision.
“Edu asked me if I was 100% sure. He told me I was going to expose myself, and I knew that, but I still wanted to do it,” he lauds.
Despite the criticism that surrounded the switch at the time, Raya has gone on to justify Arteta’s faith in him.
The Spanish goalkeeper finished the 2025/26 Premier League season as the Golden Glove winner after recording more than 20 clean sheets.
Raya’s impressive performances have also played a major role in Arsenal’s remarkable run to the UEFA Champions League final, with the Gunners enjoying one of their most successful campaigns in recent years.
Arteta’s bold call, once heavily debated, now appears to have paid off as Arsenal continue their pursuit of major silverware both domestically and in Europe.
