BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Mphatso Zathu Foundation on February 26, 2022 planted one thousand trees in Blantyre at Senior group village headman Manesi Kapeni, as one way of restoring the environment and nutrients in the soil.
During the tree planting exercise, Programs Manager for Mphatso Zathu foundation Zirare Phiri, said that the grouping would like to restore the soil nutrients that was carried away some years ago due to deforestation resulting into soil erosion.
Phiri observes that nutrients loss has led to low crop yield in the area hence the need restoration exercise.
“Faidherbia Albida is the type of trees that we have planted as it has a high chance that it will restore soil nutrients and if well taken care of, these tree will be producing nutrients that shall help the farmers not to apply fertilizer in five years to come.
Farmers that have appreciated the initiative saying planted trees will bring meaningful impacts on their production.
“We believe that the trees will be well taken care of, with the clubs that we introduced in the community”, says one farmer.
Mphatso Zathu Foundation is a non-governmental that raises awareness and making effort to address issues of climate change in Malawi.
