FAM President launches MK500 million U-23 League

MANGOCHI-(MaraviPost)-Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Fleetwood Haiya, has expressed optimism that the newly introduced Under-23 League will play a key role in unlocking raw football talent across the country.

Haiya made these remarks on Saturday during the official launch of the league in Mangochi District where he emphasized that the competition will serve as a stepping stone for young players to progress to professional football both locally and internationally.

“This league is not just about competition, it’s about creating a platform for young footballers to showcase their skills, gain experience and eventually represent Malawi at higher levels, including the Flames,” said Haiya.

The U-23 League, fully sponsored by National Bank of Malawi (NBM) to the tune of K500 million, will feature 16 teams competing in nationwide.

The top teams will advance to Division One League structures in their respective regions, strengthening grassroots football development.

Speaking at the launch, NBM Executive Charles Ulaya urged football lovers to embrace the tournament, noting that the bank has integrated its services into the event.

“We are encouraging fans to become part of this journey by opening accounts at various match venues. This is our way of ensuring that we are not only growing football but also empowering communities economically,” Ulaya explained.

The event concluded with a match where Mangochi All Stars defeated Chawe Bullets 2-0.
