BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and its top league body, the Super League of Malawi (SULOM), have jointly announced the suspension of all football activities nationwide ahead of the Tripartite General Elections scheduled for September 16, 2025.

FAM revealed that all its organized competitions, including the National Bank Women’s Premiership and the NBS Bank National Division, will be suspended from September 12 to 18.

The decision followed consultations with government authorities, security agencies and election officials, who stressed the need to free up personnel and resources during the election period.

“The suspension ensures that players, referees, security officers and other stakeholders can fully participate in the democratic process without conflict,” FAM stated.

The move is also expected to prevent potential clashes between football fans and political gatherings, as large crowds are anticipated nationwide.

FAM further urged all regional and district associations to postpone their respective competitions during the same period.

Following FAM’s directive, SULOM confirmed that all week 18 league fixtures would also be postponed.

In a statement, SULOM General Secretary Williams Banda explained that the suspension was unavoidable due to logistical and security considerations during this critical period.

“This decision has been made in line with FAM’s directive and in the interest of national peace and security,” Banda said.

“Football cannot operate in isolation. We must prioritize this important democratic process to ensure everything runs smoothly,”he added.

The suspension comes at a crucial stage in both competitions. In the National Bank Women’s Premiership, Silver Strikers Ladies are leading with an unbeaten record while several teams in the NBS Bank National Division are locked in a tight promotion battle.

Both FAM and SULOM assured stakeholders that fixtures will resume after the elections with dates for postponed matches to be announced.
