BLANTYRE(MaraviPost)—The Malawi national football team popularly known as Flames, has risen up the FIFA/Coca Cola World Football rankings as they jumped eight places up the ladder to position 98 from 106 according to latest rankings released by the world football governing body on Thursday, 18th September, 2014.
The last time the Flames hit a two digit position was in 2011 when they finished the year at position 94.
Last month Malawi were up 15 places to position 106 after beating Benin in the last preliminary round of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualification.
Despite the Flames losing 2-0 to Mali, who are on position 60, the Flames made amends with their 3-2 win over Ethiopia.
The Flames are now fifth ranked in the Cosafa region.
The fact that the Flames have moved up the ladder on FIFA rankings could come as a morale booster as they face Algeria in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations Group B qualifiers but the latter still remains dangerous as they have maintained their supremacy in Africa while swimming in the top 20 in the world.
Germany lead the world rankings while Argentina is second, Colombia third and Netherlands are fourth.
