LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)—Barely months after President Arthur Peter Mutharika returned to office following the September 16 elections, one cabinet name has stood out for its constant movement Alfred Gangata, Member of Parliament for Mtandire–Mtsiliza.
In what has become a rare political trajectory even by Malawi’s standards, Gangata has emerged as the most frequently reshuffled minister in the new administration, holding three different ministerial portfolios in rapid succession since the cabinet was unveiled.
His journey began shortly after the president’s return to State House, when he was appointed Minister of State. Yet the appointment proved short-lived.
After just two months in the role, Gangata was reassigned to the Ministry of Natural Resources, a move that many observers initially viewed as a strategic deployment of his skills,
that assumption, however, was quickly tested.
Barely a month into the Natural Resources docket, Gangata was reshuffled yet again this time landing at the Ministry of Youth and Culture, marking his third portfolio in a matter of months.
The rapid changes have ignited debate within political and public circles, with questions mounting over the rationale behind the frequent reshuffles.
The presidency has remained silent on the matter, offering no official explanation for the swift movements.
Political analysts, however, suggest the changes may point to an ongoing effort by the president to fine-tune his cabinet either in pursuit of efficiency or in search of the best fit for key portfolios during the early stages of the administration.
Others interpret the reshuffles differently, viewing them as a sign of trust rather than instability.
Despite the repeated changes, Gangata has remained firmly within the cabinet, an indication, analysts argue, that President Mutharika continues to have confidence in his leadership and political relevance.
As the new government gradually settles into office, attention now turns to whether Gangata’s latest posting will offer him the stability needed to make a lasting impact or whether his cabinet journey is still far from over.
For now, the Mtandire–Mtsiliza legislator remains a central figure in an administration still finding its footing, and a living symbol of a cabinet in motion.
