Gerald Kazembe resigns as MCP deputy Secretary General

4 Min Read

MANGOCHI-(MaraviPost)-The Deputy Secretary General of opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Gerald Kazembe, has resigned from the position.

In a letter addressed to the Secretary General, dated March 14, 2026, Kazembe says the decision follows a period of deep reflection after the September 16, 2025 general elections, which saw the party move from government to the opposition benches.

He, however, says he remains a member of the MCP.

Meanwhile, the party’s Secretary General, Richard Chimwendo Banda, has confirmed receipt of the letter.

Below is full Kazembe’s resignation letter…

Statement on Resignation as Deputy Secretary General of the Malawi Congress Party
March 14, 2026

To:
The Secretary General,
Hon Richard Chimwendo Banda
Malawi Congress Party Headquarters
Lilongwe.

Following the outcome of the 16 September, 2025 General Elections, which resulted in the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) predictably losing on the first round of voting and transitioning from government to the opposition benches, I have taken time to reflect deeply on the meaning of this moment for our party and for the people we serve.

Elections are the ultimate democratic audit. When the people render their judgment, wisdom demands responsible leadership to respond with humility, reflection, and a clear commitment to renewal. Such moments present an opportunity not only to understand where the party fell short, but also to reposition the party in a way that restores public confidence and strengthens our future prospects.

While public poll predicted that defeat was certain, against all political odds, I still made a decision to contest the elections under the banner of the Malawi Congress Party to prove to the both the naysayers and the cynics that elections can be won even beyond regional stereotypes. I could have pursued an easier independent path, but I deliberately stood on the MCP ticket because I believed firmly in the historic mission of this party and in its potential to represent a truly national and people-centred political movement with the right leadership.

I remain deeply grateful to the people of Mangochi M’baluku who, under my stewardship, delivered a rare and historic victory for an MCP Councillor and the people of Mangochi Monkey Bay, whose trust and support have allowed me the honour of representing them in Parliament. Their confidence continues to guide my commitment to public service.

However, leadership also demands the courage to take principled decisions when circumstances require it. After careful reflection on the current direction and internal dynamics of the party, I have concluded that it is in the best interest of both the Malawi Congress Party and my own responsibilities to the people I represent that I step aside from my current national leadership role as its deputy secretary general DSG.

Accordingly, I wish to announce my resignation from the position of 1st Deputy Secretary General of the Malawi Congress Party with immediate effect.

I wish to make it unequivocally clear that I remain a member of the Malawi Congress Party, and I will serve my term as a Member of Parliament under the party.

My decision reflects a sincere belief that the moment before us requires honest introspection, organisational renewal, and a renewed culture of accountability and unity within the party. Political movements remain strong when they are able to reflect candidly on their experiences, draw lessons from the will of the people and not from denial and arrogance like the current situation, and adapt in ways that strengthen both internal cohesion and national credibility.

The Kamuzu Party has a proud history and a national legacy that cannot be taken for granted by greedy and mediocre leaders. If the MCP will ever again earn the mandate to govern, it must embrace a forward-looking approach that prioritises strategic renewal, broad unity, and leadership that inspires confidence across the country not denial and arrogance, currently it does not.

Finally, I thank the rank and file members and supporters for allowing me the opportunity to have served in this capacity, and I look forward to continuing to work alongside all those who believe in strengthening the future of the Malawi Congress Party and the democratic development of our nation. May the sacred souls of Ngwazi H. Kamuzu Band, John Z.U Tembo and Mohammed Sidik Mia continue resting in peace.

Signed on this 14 day of March at Chembe Village Cape Maclear, Mangochi MonkeyBay Malawi.

Gerald Kazembe
Member of Parliament
Former Deputy Secretary General MCP
