BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The House of Commons of the United Kingdom is set to host the 29th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC) in 2028, following an announcement made at the end of the 28th CSPOC in New Delhi, India.
The conference, which brings together speakers and presiding officers from across the Commonwealth nations, aims to promote parliamentary democracy and develop institutions across its member states.
The 28th CSPOC, which took place in New Delhi, India, saw meaningful discussions on key topics such as Artificial Intelligence in Parliament, social media, security, and welfare of Members of Parliament and staff.
Malawi’s Speaker of Parliament, Right Honourable Sameer Gaffar Suleman, MP, was in attendance and has been appointed as part of the Africa Region’s new members on the Standing Committee of CSPOC for 2026-2028.
Reacting to the announcement, Speaker of the House of Commons, Lindsay Hoyle, expressed the UK’s pleasure in hosting the event, saying it would be a great opportunity for the country to showcase its commitment to parliamentary democracy.
Meanwhile, Speaker of Parliament of India, Shri Om Birla, hailed the discussions, saying they provided new directions for member states.
The CSPOC is a significant platform for Commonwealth nations to share best practices, exchange ideas, and strengthen parliamentary institutions.
With the House of Commons set to host the 29th conference, it is expected that the event will bring together leaders and representatives from across the Commonwealth to discuss pressing issues and shape the future of parliamentary democracy.
