How do women get human hair used in wigs?

The majority of human hair used in wig production comes from Asia. According to Statista, the leading exporter of human hair in 2021 was India, followed by Hong Kong, Pakistan and Brazil.

While there is an exception to every rule, most human hair extensions come from live human beings, collected mostly in India (especially southern India), Malaysia, Cambodia, and China. Key words: “Virgin Remi”. “Remy” or “Remi” – different spelling, same thing.

Human hair wigs are made out of real human hair so they look and feel real, but they also have to be re-styled after washing just like real hair. Keep reading to learn more about what makes synthetic and human hair wigs different! Which is right for you? Maybe both.

Processed hair is…well, processed. It has been chemically treated during production to make it appear a certain way. Processed hair is soaked in a highly acidic bath to strip it of its cuticles and basically remove all of the natural characteristics of the strands.

As the name suggests, Machine-Made Wigs are manufactured using modern machines in bulk. They are mass-produced in the factory by machines using human hair, animal hair, or synthetic fibers.

Cultural factors

In many East Asian cultures, short hair is seen as being more modern and stylish. It is also seen as being more practical, as it is easier to care for and manage. Fashion trends: Short hair has been a popular trend in East Asia for many years.

As cutting hair is normally only performed when someone’s parents or spouse pass away, or some important figure passes away, it representing the virtual death of oneself, as to accompany the dead.

In Hindu tradition, from birth, hair is associated with less positive aspects of or qualities from past lives. Thus at the time of the shave, the child is freshly shaven to signify freedom from the past and moving into the future.

Wigs have become a popular fashion accessory among African women for various reasons: Wigs offer versatility and convenience in hairstyling, allowing women to easily switch between different looks and styles without subjecting their natural hair to constant heat and chemical treatments.

The global hair wigs and extensions market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 16.06% during 2023-2028. The US is the leading country globally in the hair wigs and extensions market.

In 2022, the top importers of Wigs, false beards, eyebrows etc, of human hair were United States ($982M), Nigeria ($313M), United Kingdom ($111M), South Africa ($107M), and Ghana ($79.3M).
