KARONGA: Senior traditional leaders in Karonga the northern part of Malawi have contradicted with the country’s constitution as well as other organizations on the issue of witchcraft existence in the country.
As the Malawi’s constitution and organizations says there’s no witchcraft as well as criminalize the culprits, chiefs in the district have asked government to rethink their decision.
According to Traditional Authority Kilipula and Mwiland’ombe, the decision of ignoring the existence of witchcraft is not of Malawians but European countries.
“As a custodian of culture, we believe the existence of witchcraft and to say the truth it is indeed there,” said Kilipula.
“If there’s no witchcraft why some people here were in the district start crying like a goat after stealing somebody’s goats apart from different miracles happened here day by day?, argued Kilipula.
They said “what we want is that government as well as organization to find specific measures of dealing with the malpractice, especially when one accused of witchcraft.”
The chiefs also disclosed that the decision of ignoring the existence of witchcraft fuels to mob justice in the area especially because the resident believes that the law enforcers will release the accused.
According to them “the issue of ignoring witchcraft came in order to bring peace in the country but in reality it has failed and there’s need to change.”
Meanwhile, the country’s constitution is also punishing anyone calls a person witchcraft.
Issues of witchcraft has tends to cause violence in Karonga and has made many people to lose their lives and homes.
