Kenya holds state funeral for ex-president Kibaki

– –

Kenya is holding a state funeral service on Friday for former Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki who died a week ago at the age of 90.

The event is being held at the Nyayo National Stadium in the capital Nairobi. Kenyans queued to pay their last respects to the late president for several days.

The body of the late president was viewed at parliament house where it laid in state.

Friday’s state funeral service is being attended by several African presidents and other global dignitaries.

South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa, Salva Kiir of South Sudan and Ethiopia’s Sahle-Work Zewde have confirmed their attendance.

Friday has been declared a public holiday to allow Kenyans to mourn and attend the service.

The former president will be buried on Saturday at his home in central Kenya.

Mr Kibaki was sworn in as the third president of Kenya near the end of 2002, and served until 2013.

The election of President Kibaki in 2002 ended 40 years of one-party rule since independence.

Mr Kibaki was noted for his liberal reforms, which revived Kenya’s ailing economy, however he was accused of not doing enough to tackle rampant corruption.

His 2007 re-election also sparked months of nationwide violence and led to 1,200 deaths.
