Break News: Lake Malawi tragedy: five pronounced dead, 54 survive as police intensifies rescue mission

RUMPHI-(MaraviPost)- This is a follow-up to the Maravi Post Breaking News on the Easter Sunday tragedy on Lake Malawi incident that has so far, claimed five lives.

Five people have died after a boat carrying church members en-route from Easter payers, capsized on Lake Malawi in the northern district of Rumphi.

National Police Spokesperson James Kadadzera, told The Maravi Post this on Monday afternoon and confirmed that fifty four people have survived the incident, while five sadly,  dead in the incident.

Kadadzera disclosed that there were other passengers who are still missing, but that number is not yet known, since the boat captain is nowhere to be seen. He is alleged to had fled from the scene of the accident, following the boat he commanded capsized on Sunday.

The police publicist added that the rescue mission was still on-going and said the boat capsized probably due to windy weather on the Lake.

“Five people have so far died, while eight others are receiving treatment at Mlowe Health Centre in Rumphi following the drowning incident on Lake Malawi, during which a boat carrying over fifty members of the CCAP Church, capsized on the lake on Sunday evening.

“The worshippers went for Easter prayers at Mlowe and were travelling back to their homes, Tchalo, in the same district. The police will give more information as the rescue team intensifies its work on the lake,” Kadadzera said.
