BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has ordered one of the county’s internet providers Globe Internet Limited (GIL) to pay a fine of MK74, 938,006. 58 by August 17,2022 over what it describes as illegal usage of spectrum.
In a statement made available to Maravi Post, MACRA Director General Daud Suleiman claims that the fine is due that Globe Internet Limited has from April 1, 2022 been using frequencies in the 700 MHZ frequency band without a frequency spectrum license from MACRA, which is contrary to section 83(2) of the Communications Act, 2016.

On top of the fine, the regulatory body has also ordered the Globe Internet Limited to cease and desist from the usage of frequencies in the 700 MHZ band, surrender the frequencies to the Authority by August 17, 2022 and account for the revenue generated during illegal usage of frequencies in the 700MHZ band.
Meanwhile, the Authority has warned the general public that from August 17,2022, Globe Internet Limited will no longer operate in the 700MHZ band and this will affect some of its customers who use its wireless internet services delivered using the sanctioned frequency.
