Lilongwe, 2 April: Kanengo Police in Lilongwe Wednesday arrested a robber and shot another dead when he attempted to grab a rifle from an officer on duty.
Kanengo Police spokesperson, Esther Mkwanda, confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Mada Sonjala and that his full details were yet to be known.
Mkwanda identified the other suspect under custody as Jacob Ngwira, 31, from Mponda Village T/A Nsamala Balaka.
The two were among the group of criminals who attacked the house of a Mr. Roderick Langwe, Assist. District Registrar of National Registration Bureau in Area 51 during the night of 31 March to 1 April, 2015, according to Mkwanda.
“They stole a vehicle, Suzuki Swift registration number NN 63, silver in colour, laptops, plasma TV screen, phones, beddings, cash and other household items,” explained Mkwanda, adding, “They were armed with machetes and they wounded the owner of the house in the process.”
She said after the matter was reported to Kanengo Police Wednesday morning, the station’s detectives began investigations and they found the vehicle abandoned in Chilinde where they arrested the two suspects and recovered some of the stolen items in the house of Jacob Ngwira.
“Mada was shot when he grabbed by force the rifle from the hands of one of our officers,” explained Mkwanda, “He died while receiving treatment at Kamuzu Central Hospital Wednesday afternoon.”
The police said investigations were still under way to arrest the rest of the team to face justice.
