LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has obtained warrant of arrest for comedian cum politician, Bon Kalindo, for allegedly insulting President Lazarus Chakwera in Blantyre during the Friday demonstrations.
According to press statement which the police has issued, Kalindo committed an offence of insulting the President, contrary to Section 4 of protected Flags, Emblems and Names Cap. 18.03 of the laws of Malawi.
“On January 21, 2022, Blantyre District Commissioner’s office in the City of Blantyre, while addressing demonstrators, Mr. Kalindo used insulting words to the President of Republic of Malawi, His Excellency Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera.
” Mr. Kalindo is, therefore wanted by police in Blantyre. He may as well surrender himself,” reads the statement in part.
Since last year, Kalindo has been holding anti-government demonstrations due to high cost of living in the country. Last year alone, he was arrested twice for allegedly uttering false information while holding demos in Mzuzu and Mangochi respectively.
He was scheduled to appear before Zomba Magistrate court on January 20, 2022 and Lilongwe Magistrate Court on 3 February, 2022 to answer the charges.
