Blantyre, January 22, 2015: First Lady Madam Gertrude Mutharika on Tuesday led the Beautify Malawi Trust Team in donating assorted relief items to 5,830 flood victims in the area of Tradition Authority Kapeni in Blantyre.

Speaking after visiting places like Mtonda Nursery school and Health centre where the victims are accommodated, Mutharika who is also founder of the Trust expressed concern with how people had been affected by the flash floods.

“This is what prompted BEAM to come in with various relief items including blankets, soya pieces and cooking flour to console the affected families.” said Madam Mutharika.

Madam Mutharika also called on other organisations to help with relief items.

“This is one of the areas that have been affected with floods and that, I am very aware that the assorted items being donated could not match with what has been destroyed.

“I therefore assure you that BEAM will continue supporting you whenever resources permit and we are calling upon different organisations to come with their assistance.” she said.

District Commissioner for Blantyre, Atanazio Chibwana commended BEAM for the support.

“Let me say that this problem has not only affected people in T/A Kapeni rather the whole district of Blantyre as our assessment shows that out of 70 percent people who have been affected, five of them have been confirmed dead. As council, we are very thankful for the donation,” said Chibwana.

He added: “Our office is also making consultation with agriculture sector in order to assist them with planting materials as they also lost their crops during the floods besides donating basic necessities.”
