Malawi’s school sporting tournament in limbo due to Covid-19

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Schools Sports Association (Massa) admits that this year’s sports activities are at the verge of total cancellation due to hard realities of the global pandemic of Covid-19.

According to Massa’s President, Blackson Malamula, the Cool Fizz funded tournament was slated to kick off in August this year, but all the plans are in limbo since schools are closed down in the face of the disease.

“I should acknowledge that this pandemic has greatly affected schools sports. We thought that soon after resuming classes on 13th July, as it was proposed, we would go flat out doing sporting activities in August. But here we are now, we have not opened schools and we don’t know when we will open schools and almost two weeks to August.

“So, we are sure we need to sit down and strategize properly because we are not sure when schools will open. But it has greatly affected our programs, our plans because we wanted to have our national finals in August; more especially on Cool Fizz, because we are sponsored by Cool Fizz,” revealed Malamula.

Malamula further disclosed that the association would also bring onboard athletics and netball championships concurrently; under the auspices of Cool Fizz.

Massa organises sporting activities in schools in the country so as to identify talents among school going children who will later graduate to be sports icons at national level.
