BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Sports Writers Association of Malawi (SWAM) together with the Football Journalists Association ( FJA) have embarked on a charity drive towards victims of Cyclone Freddy.
The two associations are calling for non-cash contributions from their members, the entire media fraternity and the corporate world in form of clothes, shoes, blankets and other kitchen items which will go towards assisting the affected families.

SWAM General Secretary, Wesyslas Chirwa, told Maravi Post that the two associations are extending solidarity to the people affected by the battering Cyclone Freddy in at least 10 districts of Southern Malawi.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the bereaved families, those injured and displaced by the devastating storm. We take note that most of those affected by the storm are women and children who have little or no means to make ends meet. The bad weather conditions induced by the storm exposes these children to extreme cold which can potentially lead to life threatening illnesses,” remarked Chirwa.
The two associations commended efforts by government and various players to provide basic necessities to tens of thousands of homeless people in the region.
The materials and items collected will be handed over to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA).
Meanwhile, all sporting activities have been suspended in the region.
