LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Outspoken Dr. Jessie Kabwila is back in Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leadership after convincingly beating Ezekiel Ching’oma as Publicity Secretary in the ongoing party convention at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in the capital Lilongwe.
Dr. Kabwila’s election has surprised many as she did not publicly announce her return to the party after her expulsion in 2018.
According to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), unofficial results also showed that Speaker Catherine Gotani Hara has won the post of MCP First Vice President while Local Government Minister Richard Chimwendo Banda is now Secretary General.
Director of Women, Jean Sendeza is now Director of Women and Director of Youth has gone to Baba Steve Malondela.
The director of Legal Affairs is now Jivason George Kadzipatike while the Director of Public Relations has gone to Sam Kawale who is also Agriculture Minister.
MCP Treasure General is now John Paul while Director of Economic Affairs goes to Henry Mumba. Elias Chakwera is now the Director of Elections while Organising Secretary goes to Deus Gumba Banda.
Out of 18 positions, MEC has counted votes for 11 positions.
According to MEC Returning Officer, Christopher Botha, the unofficial results are a reflection of what is on the electoral commission’s dashboard and has assured members that official results will be released after vote counting has been completed.
The remaining position will be contested on Saturday, August 10, 2024.
