BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The chairperson for Malawi Electoral Commission, Justice Dr Jane Ansah Sc has this afternoon declared MCP candidate, Decent Chipangula, the winner for the by-elections that took place yesterday in matenje ward, Kasungu north west constituency.
Speaking during the announcement that took place at Mount soche hotel in Blantyre, MEC chairperson has thanked the people from Kasungu north for the peaceful elections.
She has however encouraged woman to participate in such elections as out of 5 contestants, there was no female contestant who took part in the by-elections despite the 50% discount that MEC set for female contestants.
Chipangula has won with 1489 votes followed by DPP candidate, Nelson Maseko; 1203 votes, Vincent Phiri for MMD party, 119 votes, Clifford Mbewe independent , 185 votes and Shadreck Mvula, independent, 55 votes. Out of 15760 people who registered, only 3089 turned out for polling representing 19.60% voter turn out, of which 38 votes were null and void.
In an interview with MEC chief elections officer , Sammy Njirammadzi Alfandika, he has urged with people, political leaders and all stakeholders to take part in such elections as they are as important as any other elections that take place in the country.
