Media Council signs MoU with community radios for professionalism improvement

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Media Council of Malawi (MCM) on Friday, September 1, 2023, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Association of Community Radios in Malawi (ACORA) aimed at improving professionalism.

The MoU is expected to strengthen the relationship between the council and radio stations for recognition.

The partnership comes amid community radio stations being sidelined in national events coverage for a long time.

Speaking after signing the MoU during the sidelines of media training on ethics and information government in the capital Lilongwe, ACORA Chairperson Dr. Levi Zeleza Manda expects the partnership to enhance a conducive environment for community radio station operations.

Dr. Manda said it was high time the general public started appreciating the role of community radio stations in the country’s development.

“Through the MoU, the association expects full support from the council through resource mobilization and recognition in covering national events as we have been sidelined for a while.

“The council must help us in informing government agencies, politicians, non-governmental organizations that community radio stations are equal partners in information sharing, programming,” he said.

MCM Board Chairperson Wisdom Chimgwede assured radio stations of its total support towards attaining professionalism while meeting resource needs.

Chimgwede said there is a need also for the general public to appreciate the role of community radio stations play in the development of the country.

Malawi has about 80 radio stations 62 of which are community radios operating in rural areas.
