ZOMBA (Maravi  Post)—The cat-and-mouse chase today between the Malawi Police and students of the University of Malawi’s main constituent college Chancellor College is expected to continue tomorrow morning as students vow to protest until fees is reduced.

Chanco was engulfed in teargas as students engaged in running battles with the police. There was calm on campus at around 5pm after police left the scene, our sources disclosed.

Throughout the drama, students were singing “tinapha Bingu ifeyo/tinapha Bingu ifeyo…apolisi anapha Chasowa/apolisi anapha Chasowa…” (we killed Bingu/we killed Bingu…the police killed Chasowa/the police killed Chasowa). Robert Chasowa was a Polytechnic student who was murdered by Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) thugs during the administration of Peter Mutharika’s late brother Bingu wa Mutharika.

It is yet to be seen if the administration will close the college due to the chaos. But if they do close it then it will be the second time a DPP-led administration will have closed a college.

The first time a DPP-led government closed a college was during the academic freedom saga where Chancellor College was closed for nine months. Peter Mutharika was the Minister of Education at the time.
