LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) President, Peter Mutharika, has addressed his recent absence from the campaign trail ahead of the September 2025 elections.
He explained that his time away was spent setting up a strategic team and measures to deploy once the party returns to government.
The former president’s statement comes amid criticism from those questioning why he had not been more visible, while his running mate, Jane Ansah, has been actively leading DPP campaigns across the country.
Writing on his Facebook page, Mutharika assured supporters that the strategic plans he has been developing are now ready and in place.
He invited citizens to join the party’s rallies and stopovers, highlighting the turnout of supporters in Lilongwe and Ntcheu as examples of public enthusiasm.
Mutharika emphasized that the DPP represents a message of hope and urged voters to share this message with others in their communities.
He further reminded supporters that on 16 September, they should vote for leadership that has demonstrated the ability to lower inflation, uphold the rule of law, and make essential services like fuel, foreign exchange, and passports accessible.
The former president is scheduled to hold rallies in Malawi’s Northern Region on Friday, beginning at Jenda Trading Centre in Mzimba before moving to Mzuzu roundabout.
Concluding Analysis
Peter Mutharika’s explanation for his campaign absence highlights a strategic approach that balances preparation with public engagement.
By emphasizing both the DPP’s accomplishments and future plans, he seeks to reassure supporters of the party’s readiness to govern effectively.
His planned northern tour underscores the importance of mobilizing grassroots support and directly connecting with citizens in key regions ahead of the elections.
This combination of strategic planning and visible campaigning may strengthen DPP’s position, projecting an image of competent leadership and reinforcing voter confidence in the party’s governance capabilities.
