MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police in Mzuzu have arrested a 42-year-old employee at Mzuzu Central Hospital for allegedly stealing medicines from the facility.

Northern Region Police spokesperson Cecilia Mfune said CCTV footage captured the suspect, identified as Kelvin Makina, secretly handing over drugs to another person to smuggle them out of the hospital.

According to Mfune, Makina went into hiding after the incident but was tracked down and arrested on Wednesday.

She said the suspect has admitted to the offense and will face charges once investigations are complete.

The arrest comes amid growing concern over the theft of medical supplies from public health facilities, a problem that undermines patient care and drains already limited resources.

Hospital authorities say they are reviewing security protocols to prevent similar incidents.

In a separate case, police in Blantyre on Wednesday apprehended another health worker at Chilomoni Clinic for allegedly stealing drugs and hiding them in a bag.

The suspect is currently being held at Chilomoni Police Station and is expected to appear in court soon.

Authorities have not released the name of the Blantyre suspect pending formal charges.

Police say the two arrests highlight the need for tighter internal controls and accountability in public health institutions.

Both cases are being handled by their respective police stations, with further investigations underway.
