A new cotton variety, SW 222 BG, has been officially introduced to farmers in Balaka District, offering hope for improved crop yields and better livelihoods.
The seed, produced by Seed Works International, is drought, disease, and pest tolerant, making it an attractive option for local farmers.
The introduction of SW 222 BG comes as a relief to farmers who have been complaining about the proliferation of poor seeds on the market.
Seed Works President and Business Head in Africa, Jagadeshwar Reddy Nareddy, highlighted the benefits of the new variety, saying it will help farmers increase their yields and improve their livelihoods.
According to Nareddy, Seed Works International has been producing other cotton varieties, including US 111, 133, 332, 244, and US 255.
The company is committed to supporting Malawian farmers by providing high-quality seeds and expertise.
Director of Agriculture Services at Balaka District Council, David Ali, urged farmers to form cooperatives to access seeds and other input loans more easily.
Ali emphasized the importance of cooperatives in enabling farmers to pool their resources and access better prices for their produce.
The introduction of SW 222 BG is part of the government’s efforts to resuscitate and develop cotton production in Malawi.
Cotton Council of Malawi Executive Director, Cosmas Luwanda, said the government is committed to supporting cotton production through the introduction of different hybrid varieties.
Luwanda also mentioned the establishment of a structured market for cotton as another strategy to promote cotton production.
The structured market aims to protect farmers from exploitation by unscrupulous vendors and ensure they receive fair prices for their produce.
The introduction of SW 222 BG has been well-received by farmers, who are eager to try the new variety. Many farmers have expressed hope that the new seed will help them increase their yields and improve their livelihoods.
The government’s efforts to promote cotton production are expected to have a positive impact on the lives of many Malawians.
Cotton is an important crop for many smallholder farmers, and improved yields and prices can help increase their incomes and reduce poverty.
As the new cotton variety is rolled out to more farmers, it is expected to contribute to the growth and development of Malawi’s agricultural sector.
With the right support and infrastructure, cotton production can become a major driver of economic growth and poverty reduction in the country.
The introduction of SW 222 BG is a significant step towards improving the livelihoods of Malawian farmers.
As the country continues to promote agricultural development, initiatives like this will play a crucial role in shaping the future of Malawi’s agricultural sector.
