NICE Trust urges Malawi electoral body to reopen voter registration for phase one districts

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) Trust on Thursday, April 30, 2020 requested Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to reopen voter registration for phase one in all districts that was nipped in the bud following the anticipated lockdown that the state president announced as one way of curbing the spread of the novel coronavirus.

In a statement singed by NICE Trust Executive Director Ollen Mwalubunju observed the non-existence on community mobilization process by political parties, inadequate time for stakeholders to civic education the communities among others which were caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

Mwalubunju also unveiled the lack of NB staff at registration centers which made it impossible for potential voters who do not posses National ID’s to register for the upcoming elections and numerous number of new registers which indicate that there will be no significant differences in voting patterns.

NICE has consequently urged all political parties to join forces with all stakeholders to mobilize people to go and register while following the recommendations that were put forward by COVID-19 committee to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.

NICE has also applauded MEC and all stakeholders accepting the concourt rulling to conduct fresh presidential elections on 2nd July 2020.
