Northen Region DPP Veep Jappie Mhango handpicks Age Bill advocate Mkandawire for Rumphi Central’s By-Elections

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-The governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice President for the northern region Jappie Mhango has handpicked Walita Mkandawire, Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) member and proponent of the Age Bill, to represent DPP in the upcoming By-Eections in Rumphi Central constituency.

Prior to the 2025 elections, Walita Moir Mkandawire, who was the Coordinator of HRDC in the north, organized Members of Parliament in the north and sponsored a Bill in Parliament to amend the Constitution of Malawi to bar President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika from standing based on his age.

“We want Members of Parliament to help in amending one of the constitutional provisions so that those who are above 75 years cannot stand for any political position in the country,” said Mkandawire during one of the meetings organized to advance the Age Bill amendment.

The handpicked DPP candidate will be contesting against UTM’s Mathews Chinombo Mtumbuka and AFORD’s Paul Nthambazale Nyirenda amonga others.

Mhango move has ignited tension between DPP and AFORD ranks, the two parties that are into running affairs of the state after September 16, 2025 Elections victory against Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
