MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-The country’s Young Politicians Union (YPU) Northern Region Chapter has condemned Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice President for the Northern Region, Jappie Mhango over demean remarks on Second Vice President and AFORD President, Enock Chihana.

The condemnation comes barely hours after Mhango addressed Rumphi Central constituents on Sunday, March 15, 2025 that Chihana was just a mere member in President Peter Mutharika’s cabinet.

During a campaign meeting in Rumphi Central, where both AFORD and DPP are fielding candidates despite a September 2025, electoral alliance, Mhango told the gathering that Chihana is not a cabinet minister, claiming that he (Chihana) has to beg him (Mhango) for road developments in his capacity as Minister of Transport.

But reacting to the political verbal fighting through a press statement issued on Monday, March 16, signed by YPU Northern Chapter chairperson and secretary Mervin Nxumayo and Christopher Nyirenda, respectively, observed that the remarks made by the minister not only undermine the Second Vice President but also the President and his Vice, as both are not cabinet ministers.

The statement further condemned comments made by DPP Northern Region Governor, Christopher Mzomera Ngwira, who accused Chihana of fighting President Mutharika and suggested that the Second Vice President’s tenure is set to end soon.

The young politicians have therefore called on people from the Northern Region and Malawians at large to promote peace, love, and tolerance.

“PU, therefore, condemn in the strongest terms the conduct of this regional Governor and Transport minister Jappie Mhango and ask voters of Rumphi Central Constituency not to go by his fake remarks come 17th March 2026 by-elections.

“As if he thought President Mutharika may not be in good books With Enock Kanzingeni Chihana , Mzomera Ngwira the extended His silent fake tips with conclusions saying the second vice president is not part of the Cabinet, a deliberate and unfortunate statement to misinform the constituents and promote illiteracy among them”, condemns Mhango the statement in part.

The grouping adds, “YPU Northern Region Chapter wonders why the two DPP leaders are busy attacking the Second Vice President who is not a candidate in the Rumphi Central by-election.

“As people of the north, we are disappointed because we expected to see our leaders showing unity and fostering love and not hate to lead us by example. Politics of hate and castigation is a thing of the past, we expect issue based politics and not what we are seeing from these two political leaders”.

YPU chides Mhango further, “We, therefore, condemn the statements of these two leaders and urge the people of the northern region and the whole nation at large to promote peace, love and tolerance.

“We urge youths who are aspiring for any political positions to avoid hate speech and deliberate
misinformation that promotes illiteracy and divisions among their people.

“We view both Jappie Mhango and Mzomera Ngwira’s remarks as gross indiscipline and reflecting
negatively on DPP as a party. We urge the two politicians to desist from trying to create
disagreements and bad blood between President Mutharika and Second Vice President
Enock Kanzingeni Chihana and followers of DPP and AFORD”.

YPU appeals, “We further thank His Excellency
President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika for appointing the country’s second Vice President from the northern region. This is a gesture that signifies leadership that fosters unity, inclusiveness and progressiveness.

“We urge the constituents of Rumphi Central to
come out in large numbers and vote for a candidate of their choice, not influenced by hate speeches, intolerance and deliberate misinformation.
