ABU DHABI-(MaraviPost)-At least two people have died and 120 others injured following gas cylinder explosion that ripped through six buildings and a number of stores.
Abu Dhabi Police headquarters confirmed the news of the tragedy in a statement issued on it’s official twitter page on Tuesday, May 24, 2022.
The explosion struck a restaurant just after 1 p.m. in the city’s Khalidiya neighborhood, few blocks away from the capital’s beachfront corniche
Reuters report indicated that Civil defense firefighters managed to contain the fire, which damaged several shops and the facades of six buildings.
Those that have been injured have been transported to nearby hospitals for treatment and police revealed that the building where the explosion took place has been evacuated and experts are on the scene to assess the situation.
Although authorities gave no indication of foul play, Abu Dhabi police has cautioned the public against sharing any footage of the blast and investigations into the incident has been launched.
The UAE has been on heightened alert since a Yemen rebel drone and missile attack that killed three oil workers in Abu Dhabi on January 17.
The country is part of a Saudi-led military coalition that has been fighting in Yemen since 2015 to support the government against Iran-backed Huthi rebels controlling the capital Sanaa.
